For years I have been fascinated by the ripple effect. One solitary object, when launched into a body of water can create ripple after ripple. As they fan out away from the centre of impact, the ripples grow. Filling the space as far as their energy will take them. The bigger the impact, the further the ripple travels.
You stub your toe and the ripple effect happens instantly. Emotions are released, pain, anger, frustration, foolishness.
You over sleep, your alarm hasn’t gone off, again the ripple effect happens straight away. Panic sets in, your heart races, you make mistakes in your haste, you forget your phone.
The point of impact determines the volume of ripples. A split second is all that is needed for the ripples to know which direction they are heading. We too, constantly cause ripples in our every day lives. We can become the point of impact and if we are unaware we cause chaos in our wake. Someone who is loud and bouncy can produce positive ripples in the right place, but if they are out of context those ripples become distorted. The recipient of those ripples finds it confusing and simply too much.
Being aware that we are all capable of making ripples, helps us to stop and think for a moment. Was that the impact I meant to make? Did that ripple reach the right target? How can I learn from the ripples I receive?
Go throw a stone in a puddle or in the sea. It doesn’t matter how large the body of water, what does matter is how we all react to the ripple effect.
